Darwin’s Tortoise at Cervantes Theatre
22 Feb 2017 - 18 Mar 2017
|Cervantes Theatre
|London
After the success of Blood Wedding last year, the Cervantes Theatre presents Darwin’s Tortoise, its second production this year. The play will be directed by Paula Paz and performed in both languages: Spanish and English (translated by David Johnston). Darwin’s Tortoise is one of the most popular plays written by multi-awarded Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga, whose work has been translated to many languages and represented around the World.
Published in 2008 and premiere at Teatro La Abadia in Madrid, Mayorga’s play features Harriet, the tortoise that was reputedly collected by Charles Darwin during his 1835 visit to the Galapagos Islands and died – in an Australian zoo – in 2006, at the estimated age of 176. In Mayorga’s play Harriet explains the history of the twentieth century through her experiences of surviving through it, outliving Darwin by more than 125 years.
