Esther Ferrer at Glasgow International
22 Apr - 23 Apr|
Taking place over three weeks every two years, Glasgow International is Scotland’s largest festival for contemporary art, providing a unique platform, combining a strong interwoven offer of commissions and exhibitions by both artists living locally and internationally, in both large-scale and familiar public venues, as well as smaller, less conventional sites.
For their 2018 edition they are welcoming Spanish artist Esther Ferrer and her piece I’m Going To Tell You About My Life. This performative action brings together a group of volunteer signers and non-signers, speaking in sign language and in various spoken languages, who introduce themselves to an audience.
Taking a different meaning each time it’s performed, the piece advocates for a pluralist society by presenting languages as a palpable manifestation of diversity. “The less languages we are able to speak,” believes Ferrer, “the easier it will be to impose a single way of thinking”.
