Scan is pleased to present To locate outside the sign, a project curated by Rafael Barber opening at the SCAN Project Room on March 14th 2018.
Ce’ gamin la (This boy there) is a film by Renaud Victor from 1975 about communities of autistic children at Les Cévennes (France). These communities were facilitated by the educator Fernand Deligny, a revolutionary thinker who researched on the possibilities to communicate beyond language among this people. Deligny understood its ways of communication as language, performances able to produce libertarian content beyond the sign authority.
Taking inspiration in that film and in all Deligny studies, To locate outside the sign brings together works by the artists Mauro Vallejo (Madrid 1981) and Mónica Restrepo (Bogota 1982). These artists understand their practice as a tool capable of weakening the power of the sign by its Mise-en-scène. The sign, and by extension language, are understood here as elements of symbolic power to be attenuated. To do so these artworks delve into language and its nooks, its manifestations, to decontextualise and make them navigable and tangible beyond their symbolic function.
The work by Mauro Vallejo overflows the boundaries of what is considered linguistic and creates a multi-directional dance of meanings where the sign becomes tangible and embraces time. The sign emerges to be used, to be wasted, to become routine therefore, it disseminates through the walls, the bodies, a stone, a match.
In Repertorio Monica Restrepo acts as a history teller to narrate without words the history of a lost and ruined language, a language built by objects that inspired gestures and generated open ceremonies of communication. When using them now, touching them, swapping them, we are creating new alliances between bodies beyond inherited codes.
