¡Viva! 2017 – Theatre
31 Mar 2017 - 17 Apr 2017|
This brand of the festival is going to be full of strong international performances. ¡Viva! Theatre will host two UK Premieres of Spanish work including One-Hit Wonders by dance company Sol Picó, and Birdie, a multimedia performance created by Agrupación Señor Serrano.
One-Hit Wonders is an outstanding solo show, from the winner of 2016’s Spanish National Dance Award, built with fragments of Sol Picó’s most iconic works, D.V.A (Dudoso valor artístico)(1999); Bésame el cactus (2000); Paella Mixta (2004); El Llac de les Mosques (2009) and Memòries d’una puça (2012). She will be accompanied on stage by actor, fakir and machinist Joan Manrique. But they are not the only outstanding group that will perform at this Festival. Agrupación Señor Serrano, a theatre company that won the Silver Lion 2015 from the Venice Biennale, brings Birdie, an original productions based on stories drawn from contemporary times
In addition, following the sold-out success of Don Quijote at the festival in 2016 Emma Frankland and Keir Cooper return with the World Premiere of Republica. The performance is a fusion of anarchic theatre and dance, a flamenco dancer, a guitarist and a stripper that the rise in opposition between anti-austerity and far-right movements all over Europe and the UK.
The section Barcelona Now will have two scratch performances from Barcelona playwright Josep Maria Miró on HOME’s main stage, Smoke and The Archimedes Principle. Both plays will be performed by actors from the Greater Manchester area and directed by Walter Meierjohann and Samuel Ward. Smoke tells the story of two couples meet in the hotel of a developing country, where they are confined for three days due to an outbreak of violence in the area. The encounter exposes the delicate balance of their existence and leads them into a spiral of lies and betrayals. The Archimedes Principle shows a town haunted by an incident at the nearby Scouts centre, regular swimming lessons come to a halt when an instructor is accused of inappropriately touching a child during a lesson. Everything gets worse when the dangers of social media creep to the surface.
