The European Research Council (ERC) is the first pan-European funding body for frontier research. The ERC’s mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, on the basis of scientific excellence.
The ERC offers three main annual grant schemes, with funding for up to five years: Starting Grants (for researchers with 2-7 years of experience after their PhD), Consolidator Grants (7-12 years), and Advanced Grants (more than 10-year excellent scientific track record).
In the last Starting Grant Call (2021), 29 Spanish projects got funding; whereas 17 projects got funding in the last Consolidator Grant Call (2021). These projects cover all areas of knowledge, including Social Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Life Sciences and will be led by Spanish and international researchers. Spain is the 5th EU country that will host the higher number of projects, just after Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Italy. This proves not only the high quality of the Spanish R&D ecosystem but also the interest of international researchers to carry on their research in Spanish institutions.
During the next weeks, we will be presenting those researchers that have obtained an ERC Starting or Consolidator Grant 2021, as well as their projects, to highlight the edge-cutting research developed in Spain. You can find the uploaded profiles HERE.
