Before and After Schengen

In After Shengen, Madrid based photographer Ignacio Evangelista explored the historical meanings of European frontiers, now almost obsolete through the phantom presence of old checkpoints that connected different territories. What seemed like a distant past is now becoming a new reality, as changes in the European Union seem to question the map shaped by Shengen.
Taking the series as a starting point, Evangelista will be conducting a new event at the St Bride Foundation. Joined by Hungarian-born poet George Szirtes and with the help of violinist Shiry Rashkovsky, Ignacio will discuss his fascination with these crossing points, inviting the audience to explore what it means to move freely around the European Union, and what the monuments from the past can teach us for the future.
Event times: 15 February 2018 1:15pm – 2:00pm and 7:30pm – 8:00pm
