BMM 2018 – Women in Visual Arts
21 Nov 2018 - 22 Nov 2018|
County Hall Gallery|
The Women in Visual Arts Biennial is coming to London. Organized by MAV (Women in Contemporary Visual Arts), the program aims to generate professional links between female artist and to shine a light on their current practice. For this event, MAV is partnering with Brit Es Magazine, helping craft a program in which various galleries will be present.
Women have dominated the field of cultural studies for over thirty-five years, filling the ranks of Fine Art, Art History, Aesthetics, Literature and Film degree programmes and earning the highest honours. Where good practices prevail—transparent selection criteria, blind evaluations and clear benchmarks—the presence of women in positions of cultural leadership is proportionate to their predominance in cultural education. However, when opaque selection criteria come into play, such as direct appointments or arbitrary personal interests, men monopolize the majority of power and decision-making positions thanks to the persistence of outdated models.
The Biennial produces and gathers initiatives that aim to highlight the female practice that has gender as a center point. In it’s 2018 edition, it will strengthen this goals with a selection of works by different artist and female-led collectives.
