Javier Marías has established himself as a leading intellectual figure both in Spain and around the world, a fact that invites further study of the transnational dimensions of his literary and cultural output. This bilingual conference aims to take a fresh look at all aspects of Marías’s oeuvre and its reception, including his newspaper columns and his translations, as well as his novels and stories, and to assess his trajectory and contributions within the world republic of letters.

Javier Marías scholarship has grown considerably since the publication of the first critical studies in the 1990s, reflecting the prolific scope and the increasingly international reputation of one of Europe’s foremost contemporary authors. Groundbreaking initial assessments have focused on questions of style, postmodernity, and the presence of the past, among other considerations of his work. More recently, a wide range of critical interests has emerged, from ethics and philosophy, to translation and cinema. At the same time, Marías has established himself as a leading intellectual figure both in Spain and around the world, a fact that invites further study of the transnational dimensions of his literary and cultural output.
