La Caixa Collection of contemporary Art
17 Jan - 28 Apr|
Spanish novelist Enrique Vila-Matas curates this exhibition, also known as Cabinet d’amour, an oblique novel, to showcase a selection of pieces that only respond to his fantasies, impulses and desires.
Known for the metafictions that blend genres, Vila-Matas uses these works from the la Caixa collection to mediate on his literary and artistic influences in a new text accompanying his display. He seeks truth through this fiction and values the ambiguity of experience.
Among the selected pieces, there’s a portrait by Gerard Richter; a video installation by his close friend Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster; selected pieces by Dora García and Carlos Pazos, a mixed media painting by Miquel Barceló and a digitally collaged photograph by Andreas Gursky.
This display is the first of four from the la Caixa collecton of Contemporary Art, established in 1985 to foster dialogue between Spanish and international art. Whitechapel Gallery has invited leading authors to curate the displays and to contribute a fictional text based on their selection.
