‘The Others’ is set in 1837, in the midst of the Carlist War. Rudolf von Wielemann, a young Prussian, crosses the Pyrenees to fight on the side of Order, but due to a misunderstanding he gets stuck in a bewildering city in ruins. In this place everything is turned upside down, transfigured or dislocated: friendship, family, religion, politics… With the passage of time, von Wielemann’s astonishment increases, to the point these ruins become his continual companion and the only way left to see the world. With a style that touches all the registers between humour and tragedy, and alternating between the present and the past, the book takes us on a journey to the centre of the disturbing strangeness that each one of us carries within.
