SUMMARY:Copla: A Spanish Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:Copla: A Spanish Cabaret \n15 May | Pride in Trafford | Manchester\n\n\nBorn in the shadows of Franco’s dictatorship\, copla was censored\, reshaped and made respectable. \nBut beneath the high glamour and heartbreak\, it carried something else\, coded queer desire\, dangerous longing and stories that couldn’t be spoken aloud. \nAlejandro Postigo‘s show drags them into the spotlight\, through English reworkings of classic coplas\, sharp storytelling and playful audience moments. \nIt’s bold. It’s funny. It’s tender when you least expect it. \nPart cabaret\, part reclamation\, the show bridges Spain’s fractured past with the lived experience of building a queer life in the UK. \nGet ready to laugh\, sing and tap your feet as you step into the subversive\, dramatic and unapologetically queer world of Copla! \nPart of the Pride in Trafford 2026 festival programme.

SUMMARY:Zurbarán Monographic Exhibition @ National Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Francisco de Zurbarán\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n02 May – 23 Aug 2026 | National Gallery | London\nThe first major monographic exhibition in the UK devoted to Spanish 17th-century artist Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664)\, will open at the National Gallery next spring (2 May – 23 August 2026). \nAlong with Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682)\, Zurbarán was one of the leading painters of 17th-century Spain. His paintings\, which include stunning life-size depictions of saints\, soaring altarpieces and contemplative still lifes\, are celebrated for their naturalism\, directness and deep emotional power. \nThis exhibition is the first dedicated presentation of the artist’s paintings at the National Gallery since 1994 when the series of ‘Jacob and his Twelve Sons’ from Auckland Castle was shown in the Sunley Room. Several works by Zurbarán also featured in the 2009-2010 exhibition\, The Sacred Made Real. \nThis exhibition of almost 50 paintings will span the chronological and iconographic breadth of the artist’s career.

DESCRIPTION:From Islington to Spain\, Londoners Who Fought Fascism – Walking Tour\n\n\nMinerva Romay (Londoners Walking) \n\n\n\n12 April & 12 July | Islington Town Hall | London\n\n\n\n\nDiscover the stories of the people\, the principles they stood for\, and the places that played a significant role in this tumultuous time. \n\n\n\n\nStep into a forgotten chapter of London’s past—one shaped not in Westminster\, but in the backstreets\, libraries and meeting halls of Islington and Clerkenwell. \nThis two-hour guided walk uncovers the Londoners who refused to stay silent during the Spanish Civil War. SUMMARY:Mònica Planes - Gasworks Residency
DESCRIPTION:Mònica Planes @ Gasworks\n8 Apr – 23 Jun | Gasworks | Vauxhall\n\n\nMònica Planes’ work explores the relationships between bodies\, materials\, and architectural space. Understanding that sculpture has the capacity to both affect and be affected by its surroundings\, in her work\, she combines a moving body with fixed material structures. Often using diverse materials including concrete\, hay\, fat\, or coal\, she captures ephemeral gestures that reflect society and our surroundings. \nDuring her time at Gasworks\, Mònica will explore how collective performance can generate a sculptural frieze. She will visit Greek and Assyrian friezes at the British Museum to learn how these ancient panels construct visual narratives\, inviting viewers to “read” through movement. Until this moment\, her sculptural practice has emerged from individual actions\, so this project marks a significant shift towards the collective\, where bodies shape the material and dialogue defines the movement. \nMònica Planes (b.1992\, Barcelona) \nPlanes lives and works in Barcelona. \nRecent exhibitions include \nàngels Barcelona; \nFuocherello\, Turin; \nMACBA\, Barcelona (all 2025); \nLa Casa Encendida\, Madrid; \nMuseo Patio Herreriano\, Valladolid (both 2024); \nTenerife Espacio de las Artes; \nC3A Córdoba in collaboration with TBA21 (both 2023). \nShe was formerly a resident at the Spanish Academy in Rome\, and her work is included in collections including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía\, the National Collection – Generalitat de Catalunya\, and MACBA. \nMònica Planes’s residency is supported by Acción Cultural Española

SUMMARY:Lyric DragonFly - Opera & Clown
DESCRIPTION:Lyric DragonFly\, Chrysalis in 3Arias – Opera & Clown\npart of\nFestival Women Writers\n20 – 22 March | Etcetera Theatre | Camden\nBook Now \nCome. Sit close. Sing along. \n“Lyric Dragonfly” arrives in London for the first time at the Women Writers Festival. \nIt’s a lyrical and clowning piece with its corset undone: a woman appropriates iconic tenor arias\, glides between virtuosity and clown\, and turns failure into an act of rebellion. \nRaw\, intimate\, and unapologetic\, the play breaks the mold and invites the audience to cross the line: to breathe together and risk emotion with a perspective of equality. \nA bold\, intimate and poetic piece that challenges the classical canon and celebrates women’s voices on stage. \nThe tenor arrives\, as always\, late. But a crisis can be the perfect moment to discover your own potential and… FLY! \nVulnerability finds unexpected ways to fuel courage. \nPAGLIACCI “Vesti la giubba” & TOSCA “É lucevan le stelle” & TURANDOT “Nessum dorma” & RIGOLETTO “La donna é movile” \nRINALDO “Lascia ch’io pianga” \nHabanera from CARMEN opera “L’amour c’est un oisseau rebelle”
