SUMMARY:Dance: Igor and Moreno
DESCRIPTION:Igor Urzelai and Moreno Solinas\, two London-based dance artists\, call on their folk Sardinian and Basque tradition to create their contemporary dance. They are making and presenting work across Europe and internationally and have been creating dance works in partnership since 2007. Their work is characterized by a strong will to employ a poetic yet political language through the use of the body\, voice\, text and design to create finely crafted and playful dance works which are in equal parts exciting and uncompromising\, poetic and thought-provoking. This year they will perform different works in several cities around the UK. \nIdiot-Syncrasy is a quirky piece\, a jumping dance that says ‘don’t let the world bring you down’. Sometimes intense\, sometimes delightfully funny\, the two performers shift through repetitive movement revealing subtle distinctions. It has been described as ‘clever and engagingly off-beat’ by The Times. \nURANUS is a performance for body and voice. Love and sex\, need and fear\, spirit and fluid. Entertains the audience with song and performance\, then sets them a challenge they weren’t expecting. \nSpot the Difference is a duet for two performers who seem identical. It celebrates similarities and differences\, belonging and individuality. Igor and Moreno have been joined by Irish choreographer and performer Aoife McAtamney for this project. \nSchedule: \n– 6-29 August: Idiot-Syncrasy. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Imagining Don Quixote
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the centenary of Cervantes’ death\, the British Library presents a set of illustrations from the masterpiece of the Spanish literature Don Quixote. \nCervantes´s novel Don Quixote is one of the world´s most frecuently illustrated books. The ever-changing style of illustration reflects different ways in which the novel has been seen over time and according to place. Taking four key episodes\, this exhibition explores how they have been imagined from the 17th century to the present\, from early printed editions to the graphic novel. Key items include editions by Gustave Doré and Salvador Dalí and sketches by Terry Gilliam for his original Don Quixote film project.

SUMMARY:Catalan Avant-Garde at the ICA
DESCRIPTION:The ICA\, the Institut Ramon Llull (IRL) and Reel Solutions present Catalan Avant-Garde\, a series of rarely seen new and recent Catalan films from February to December 2015. The season will include UK premieres of Tots volem el millor per a ella (2013) directed by Mar Coll\, and Born (2014) directed by Claudio Zulian. \nA substantial part of Catalan cultural output has always been in the vanguard of artistic movements\, without making concessions to commercial demands Miró\, Dalí\, Gaudí\, Portabella or Montsalvatge to name but a few. DESCRIPTION:This recital celebrates the Centenary of Enrique Granados’ death. \nEnrique Granados\, (1867-1916) was one of the leading composers of the Spanish Musical Nationalism. His 12 Danzas españolas achieved great popularity. His interest in the 18th century is reflected in his tonadillas\, songs written “in the ancient style.” His masterpieces\, the Goyescas (1911–13)\, are reflections on Goya’s paintings and tapestries. SUMMARY:Opera: La Fura dels Baus "Oedipe"
DESCRIPTION:Premiered on 23 May\, “Oedipe”\, directed by Àlex Ollé and Valentina Carrasco of the acclaimed Catalan theater group La Fura dels Baus\, is part of the Spring 2016 Season at the Royal Opera House and runs until 8 June. \nLa Fura dels Baus first staged their production of “Oedipe” at La Monnaie\, Brussels\, in 2011. The spectacular take on Enescu’s exploration of fate and freedom of this innovative theater company is indeed the Royal Opera’s first production of Enescu’s operatic masterpiece. The performance features Danish star Johan Reuter in the title role and an excellent cast including Sir John Tomlinson\, Sarah Connolly and Sophie Bevan and is conducted by Leo Hussain.

SUMMARY:Marco Godoy: Europe
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the visual and symbolic relationships between authority and power\, Spanish artist Marco Godoy (b. 1986 Madrid) analyses the social and political ramifications of the real and fictional divides that make up the European Union. In his upcoming exhibition at Copperfield\, Godoy works with sculpture\, installation\, and photography to explore the concept of Europe’s boarders. \nPresenting these divides as a construction of authority\, Godoy’s work illustrates the peculiarity of differences in basic legal rights such as labour wages that change within a matter or meters from one country to another. Attention is also drawn to the way the actual geographical divide removes those in the United Kingdom from the full effects of issues such as the refugee crisis. \nMarco Godoy has studied Fine Arts at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is a graduate of the Royal College of Art (2014). Following his recent group exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and Palais de Tokyo\, The exhibition Europe at Copperfield\, London will be Godoy’s first solo show in the UK.

DESCRIPTION:The Architectural Association School of Architecture has organized a book launch for Gardens of the Senses: The Spanish Gardens of Javier Mariátegui. The book author will be introduced by Dame Esperanza Aguirre\, Mr Juan Luis Libano and Mr Javier Mariátegui.\nJavier Mariategui studied landscape gardening and design at the Escuela de Paisajismo y Jardineria Castillo de Batres in Madrid\, which he followed by working in England as a gardener. Back in Spain\, he created the Jardines de España nursery\, which looks after and employs handicapped children\, with whom he first started making gardens. He has published numerous articles on landscape gardening topics in specialized magazines\, and his work has appeared in the most prestigious publications.

SUMMARY:Gerald Martin: Parallel Lives – A Biographer’s View of Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Canning House – Instituto Cervantes Cultural Address will be delivered by Gerald Martin\, biographer of García Márquez and Vargas Llosa. Both Literature Nobel Prize Winners were major figures in the “Latin American Boom” of the 1960s and 70s; García Márquez’ notable works are One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera\, and Vargas Llosa’s include Conversation in the Cathedral \, Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter and The Feast of the Goat.\nGerald Martin\, Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages in the University of Pittsburgh\, is a literary critic and historian. His research and publications have focused on the Latin American novel. His PhD was devoted to Miguel Angel Asturias\, who won the Nobel Prize before it was completed. He has produced critical editions of Hombres de maíz (1981) (Men of Maize) and El Señor Presidente (2000) (The President)\, as well as translating the former work. He has also translated novels by the Spanish writers Rafael Chirbes and Max Aub. In the 1980s he concentrated on the history of literature and the arts\, contributing three major chapters to the Cambridge History of Latin America and publishing Journeys through the Labyrinth: Latin American Fiction in the Twentieth Century (1989). Since then he has focused on biography.

In the last few years\, the company has lifted the curtain more than 1\,500 times and their stage work for babies\, children/youth\, families and street audiences has been seen by nearly a million spectators.

SUMMARY:Joan Cleville dance: Plan B for Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Plan B for Utopia is a playful dance theatre work by Dundee-based company Joan Clevillé Dance. Charismatic performers Solène Weinachter (Scottish Dance Theatre\, Gecko) and John Kendall (balletLORENT) explore the notion of utopia and the role that imagination and creativity can play as a driving force for change in our personal and collective lives. \nJoan was born and raised in Barcelona and combined studies in Humanities at University Pompeu Fabra with dance training at ‘La Companyia’.  From there he lived in Madrid for 3 years working with Ballet Carmen Roche and then in Valencia with Ballet de Teatres de la Generalitat Valenciana.  Joan then moved to Dundee in Scotland to work with Scottish Dance Theatre and after 4 years\, left the company to form his own company\, Joan Clevillé Dance which is based in Dundee and is now in its second year.  Joan still has close ties to Spain\, and has recently choreographed for Thomas Noone Dance and the graduating students of Institut del Teatre and will be back this summer to teach at Barcelona Summer Dance.

DESCRIPTION:To commemorate de 400th anniversary of the death of Cervantes the Institute Cervantes will host a lecture with José Enrique Gil-Delgado Crespo to present his book “… And Shakespeare read Don Quixote”. \nThe plot of this novel is base on a proven historical event\, the utilization of Cardenio\, a character of Don Quixote\, by Shakespeare to write one of his last plays. This play which was sadly lost\, recounted an encounter amongst both writers. \nJosé Enrique Gil-Delgado Crespo (Madrid\, 1944) is a writer\, philologist and translator. He has worked as an adviser for some BBC didactic broadcasts and has also been a teacher at the Institute Cervantes. Aside many academic articles\, he has also published two novels “…y pasó en tiempos del Cid” and “… And Shakespeare read Don Quixote”.

DESCRIPTION:The guitarrísimo series is a collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes and the Iberian and Latin American Music Society\, organised with the kind support of The British Mexican Society and Wines from Spain. Special guest\, guitarrist Morgan Szymanski will offer a concert as part of the guitarrismo series. \nBorn in Mexico City in 1979\, Morgan Szymanski started playing the guitar at the age of six. Early studies at the National Music School (Mexico) and the Edinburgh Music School led to a scholarship to study under Carlos Bonell and Gary Ryan at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London\, graduating in 2004 with first class honours. A top prize-winner at international competitions\, in 2002 Morgan won first prize at the National Guitar Competition in Mexico. Performances as a soloist and with orchestras have taken him to concert halls and festivals in Argentina\, China\, France\, Germany\, Holland\, Italy\, Luxembourg\, Mexico\, Macedonia\, Portugal.
