DESCRIPTION:Ángela de la Cruz : Upright\n25 Mar – 06 Sept | IKON Gallery | Birmingham\nFREE EXHIBITION \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIkon Gallery presents rarely seen works by acclaimed artist Ángela de la Cruz alongside a new commission developed in collaboration with Birmingham Royal Ballet. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuest curated by Carolina Grau\, the exhibition focuses on de la Cruz’s concern with the human body and the realities of everyday survival. Her sculptural paintings – such as Still Life with Table (2000)\, featuring canvas stretched over collapsed domestic structures\, and Bloated III (Blue) (2012)\, composed of hammered metal – capture the physical dimensions of de la Cruz’s body and emotional relationships between strength and fragility. \nThrough evocative object-based narratives\, de la Cruz captures life’s shifting conditions: from the joy of music in Upright Piano (1999) to the vulnerability of Transfer (2010–12). These figurative associations invite reflection on resilience\, adaptation\, and the human condition. \nÁngela de la Cruz (born 1965\, La Coruña\, Spain; lives London) has been experimenting with the language of painting and sculpture for more than thirty years. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2010\, and this marks her first solo exhibition in the UK outside of London. \nThe exhibition is generously supported by Henry Moore Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Francisco de Zurbarán\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n02 May – 23 Aug 2026 | National Gallery | London\nThe first major monographic exhibition in the UK devoted to Spanish 17th-century artist Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664)\, will open at the National Gallery next spring (2 May – 23 August 2026). \nAlong with Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682)\, Zurbarán was one of the leading painters of 17th-century Spain. His paintings\, which include stunning life-size depictions of saints\, soaring altarpieces and contemplative still lifes\, are celebrated for their naturalism\, directness and deep emotional power. \nThis exhibition is the first dedicated presentation of the artist’s paintings at the National Gallery since 1994 when the series of ‘Jacob and his Twelve Sons’ from Auckland Castle was shown in the Sunley Room. Several works by Zurbarán also featured in the 2009-2010 exhibition\, The Sacred Made Real. \nThis exhibition of almost 50 paintings will span the chronological and iconographic breadth of the artist’s career.

DESCRIPTION:OPEN CALL – DEADLINE 20 July\nFundación Hispano Británica has announced the second edition of\n«The Eleanor of Castile\, Queen of England Award»\nWorth €3\,000\, the prize aims to promote and recognise the work of journalists\, communicators and disseminators in the written media\, both in Spain and UK\, as it honours their contribution to a better relationship & mutual understanding. \nWorks must have been published in writing in a Spanish or British medium btw 20 May 2024 – 20 May 2026. Up to 2\,000 words. Max 5 works per candidate.  \nThe Prize was created in honour of Eleanor of Castile (1241- 1290)\, Queen consort of England through her marriage to Edward I. She was an influential figure who helped strengthen the ties between Castile and England. She is considered a key figure who symbolised the beginning of a period of understanding between the two Monarchies that would later give birth to the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. \nThe call for entries is open until 20 July 2026 for both Spain and the United Kingdom. The prize is worth THREE THOUSAND EUROS (€3\,000) and is sponsored by the five-star luxury hotel HOTEL HERITAGE MADRID\, a member of the prestigious French association Relais & Châteaux\, located at Calle Diego de León\, 43\, Madrid. \nCandidate works must have been published in writing\, in Spanish or English\, in a Spanish or British medium\, with a maximum length of 2\,000 words\, between 20 May 2024 and 20 May 2026. Each candidate may submit a maximum of five works. \nThe jury\, appointed by the Fundación Hispano Británica\, will be chaired by Mr Ramón Pérez-Maura.
