Andrés Jaque and Nina Power on gender
12 Feb 2018 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm|
To inaugurate its new program on architecture panels, the Royal Academy invites Spanish professor and architect Andrés Jaque to explore how the aesthetics of architecture are shaped in response to gender issues. Joining him will be philosopher Nina Power, specialized in gender studies. “Gender” is one of the most fluid concepts of the past century, and while it has been widely analyzed by visual arts, there’s a question that remains unexplored: is there such a thing as masculine or feminine in architecture?
Through his practice Andrés Jaque questions how architecture can help prompt new ways to structure our interactions with others and change how we relate to gender constructions and issues. His investigations on sex an urbanism match his projects exploring contemporary domesticity. In the first conversation of the series, Jaque will discuss with philosopher Nina Power his recent research and overall practice, examining the role gender plays in forming ideas about architecture and how these ideas affect the way we conceptualize space.
