García Lorca’s ‘Sonets of dark love’

27 Feb 2017 6:45 pm

Book launch: García Lorca’s ‘Sonets of dark love’

On Monday 27th February will take place at King’s College the presentation of the bilingual edition of The Tamarit Divan and the Sonnets of Dark Love translated by Jane Duran and Gloria García Lorca with essays by Christopher Maurer and Andrés Soria Olmedo.

‘The Tamarit Divan’ and ‘Sonnets of Dark Love’ were written toward the end of Lorca’s brief life and published posthumously. The poetry created is characterised by a conjunction of desire and death in a poetic chiaroscuro. In his poetry, Lorca pays homage to Spanish mystics, to Italian masters of the sonnet, and to the Arab poets of his native Andalusia.

Jane Duran and Laura García Lorca will be participating in a Q&A session with the audience.

‘Written shortly before his assassination in the Spanish Civil War, this is Lorca at his most intimate, passionate and vulnerable, scouring the “night of the soul forever dark”. George Szirtes, Poetry Book Society Bulletin
