The study shows that neural cells do not die due to chemical toxicity as thought but because of lethal electrical waves. This discovery will help treat strokes more efficiently.
After the interruption of the blood supply to the brain, the first that leads to the death of neurons is the appearance of a wave of electrical potential that circulates through the tissue, silencing the neurons in its path and causing them to lose their ability to generate electricity and process information.
This new analysis, published in the journal Neurocritical Care, counts with the participation of Óscar Herreras (Cajal Institute, CSIC). The review challenges the dominant theory about how neurons die in stroke, which puts chemical toxicity at the forefront. These electrical waves may be a new therapeutic target to treat stroke more effectively.
