Today, his Majesties the Kings presented the 2019 National Research Awards to scientists Valentín Fuster de Carulla, Ángela Nieto Toledano, Susana Marcos Celestino, Manuel Francisco Carreiras Valiña and Mercedes García-Arenal Rodríguez.
In continuation of the act, His Majesty the King said a few words where he emphasized “You know well, and you remind us so often, that good science, high-level and high-impact research, requires not only resources, always scarce; it needs-almost with equal demand-stability, foresight, patience in the times and rigour and ethics in the processes”.
Don Felipe also stressed that “we are grateful for your exemplary dedication and commitment to science and knowledge. Your daily work and your successes certainly contribute to the greater social well-being of citizens. And you are the evidence of the scientific talent that our country possesses, a talent that we must take care of with care and long-term vision”.
His Majesty the King also explained that “I will not be tired of stressing the importance of science for our present and future, and the need for Spain to be at least at the level of investment in science and innovation in the countries around us and in the EU average. All Universities, companies, administrations and society as a whole must do everything that is possible to increase the capabilities, quality and excellence of Spanish science. I insist: it is investment, it generates wealth and jobs, it improves life, it favours development and, yes, for all this, it also gives a great prestige as a country”.
